Rant: got two quotes for my Nob Hill bathroom tile and the cheaper one cost me way more
I had two guys come out to look at retiling my bathroom floor here in Nob Hill. One quoted $1,800 and the other quoted $2,600, so of course I went with the cheaper guy thinking I was being smart. He laid the tile right over the old cracked stuff and didn't level the floor first, so now three tiles pop when you step on them and the grout cracked within a month. The $2,600 guy had told me he always pulls the old layer and puts down backer board, and I wish I had just paid for that. Anyone else learned this the hard way, and how did you handle it?
Cheaper isn't always the smarter move and this is a good example why. The real cost of a job isn't just the number on the quote, it's whether the guy actually fixes the problem or just covers it up. Laying tile over cracked old stuff is a shortcut that's bound to fail, and any pro worth hiring knows you gotta prep the subfloor first or you're wasting everyone's time. So the 2600 guy wasn't overcharging, he was quoting you the actual job while the 1800 guy quoted you a patch that was never gonna last. Yeah it stings to pay more up front but you're now looking at paying twice plus dealing with the mess. If it were me I'd get the cheap guy back and make him tear it out, or at least get some money back, since he clearly did it wrong.
