My 1950s bathroom tile job turned into a $2,100 mess after the grout cracked
I finally got around to redoing the bathroom in my place near Nob Hill two weeks ago, and I was so proud of those white subway tiles until the grout started cracking along the whole back wall. Turns out the guy who sold me the thin set said it was fine for a shower wall, but the tile shop on Central told me later I needed a different one for the moisture. Did anyone else run into cracked grout their first time tiling, and is there a fix that won't mean ripping it all out?

Man that hits home. I did my kitchen backsplash last spring and the grout started cracking within a month along the countertop edge. Same deal too, the guy at the big box store told me any old thin set would work and of course it didn't. What I learned after some digging is that the crack is usually not the grout's fault, it's movement underneath, so the tile is flexing a little and the grout can't take it. You can dig out the cracked lines with a grout saw and redo just those with a sanded caulk made for wet areas, which buys you time. It's not a forever fix though, if the thin set under there is wrong you might be looking at popping a few tiles down the road.
