My last trip to Blue Lake showed me how things have shifted
I remember how the trail to Blue Lake has changed. When I was a kid, it was just a dirt path with one old sign. I found a waterfall that wasn't on any map. Now, part of the path is paved, and there are many benches. You need a permit to hike there because it's so crowded. It's nice that more folks can enjoy it, but I miss the peace. Makes me wonder if we're loving these places too much.

Actually, that permit's probably for parking, not hiking.

Totally, that's exactly what tripped me up last year at the state park. I got the annual pass thinking it covered everything, but nope, it was just for the vehicle entry. Still needed a separate day-use permit to actually hit the trails from the lot. Felt like such a rookie move, showed up all ready to go and had to scramble on my phone. They really don't make it clear.

Ugh, that's so frustrating! I read an article last month about how park fee systems are a mess because they're not standardized. Like @davis.max said, it's often about parking, but the wording is so confusing. They use terms like "day-use permit" that could mean anything, and it's not clear what's covered. I heard from a friend that some parks even have different rules for the same pass depending on the season. It really feels like they're setting people up to fail. Have you ever tried calling ahead to check, or is that just as hit or miss?
