Plastic vs steel scale, my 3 week switch back

I swapped my old plastic architectural scale for a steel one at a shop in Portland last month. The weight felt solid, but after 3 weeks of drawing, my wrist started aching from the heft. I am back on plastic now and the lines are still crisp, though I worry about the edges wearing down. Has anyone else tried going heavier and regretted it, or am I just being picky?

Have you checked whether you're holding the scale differently with the heavier one? My buddy in Seattle went through the same thing last year. He bought a stainless steel ruler for drafting and loved how it felt on the table, but after two weeks his forearm was sore every night. Turns out he was gripping it tighter to keep it steady, which put all the strain on his wrist. He switched back to plastic too and the soreness went away in a few days. The edges on his plastic one have worn a bit, but he just flips it over and uses the other side.
