That older guy in Chiang Mai who told me to slow down
Back in 2019, my first real stretch as a digital nomad, I was grinding hard in Chiang Mai. 8 client calls a day, coffee shops from 7am to 7pm, treating productivity like a contest. One afternoon at a place near the old city, an expat in his 60s sat down across from me. He saw my laptop stickers and said, "You're working like you're afraid the internet will run out." I laughed it off, but he kept talking. Said he'd been out here since 2004, back when he had to rent a desk at a print shop just to get a steady connection. He told me he used to measure his worth by how many emails he sent before lunch. Then he asked what I'd seen that week besides my screen. I couldn't name one thing. That conversation stuck with me more than any profit report. I still catch myself falling back into the old habit. Has anyone else had a run-in with a long timer who made you question your whole setup?
