Overheard a hostel owner bragging about fake wifi reviews in Chiang Mai
Last Tuesday I was grabbing coffee near Nimman and heard this guy who runs a guesthouse telling his friend they bought 40 five star reviews for their 'fast fiber' wifi, but the actual speed test in the lobby hit 4 Mbps. It got me thinking about how many of us pick spots based on those ratings and end up stuck trying to run Zoom calls from a park bench. Has anyone else walked into a place that looked great online but totally failed on the internet, and what's your backup plan when that happens?

My buddy booked a place in Pai last year based on glowing wifi reviews and showed up to find the router sitting in the office with a sign saying it was off after 10pm. He ended up doing his whole week of calls from a cafe down the street that had decent speed but terrible coffee. His fix now is buying a local sim card with a big data pack before he even checks in, so the room wifi is just a bonus and not his whole plan. It costs a bit extra but saves him from that panicked hunt for a signal at the worst time. Those bought reviews are sneaky too because the place can look perfect on paper while the actual connection is useless.
