My pixel art went from 16 colors to 64 in the span of 2 years and it looks worse
Back in 2019 I was stuck at 16 colors because that was all the palette tool I had would allow. I grabbed a newer program last month and suddenly had 64 colors to play with, so I went wild and now my sprites look muddy and messy compared to the clean old ones. Has anyone else had a bigger color count make their showcase pieces actually look worse?
That line about going wild with 64 colors is the real problem here, and it has nothing to do with skill. When you only have 16 slots, every color has to fight for its spot, so you naturally end up using colors that are far apart on purpose. Bump that to 64 and all the sudden you can throw in five shades of the same brown, and those in-between shades are what turn everything into mush. The old sprites looked clean because each color did a job, like one green for the leaf and one for the shadow, not six greens that all sit next to each other on the wheel. Try picking your 16 favorite colors from the 64 and hiding the rest, bet the muddiness goes away fast.
