GIF exports vs MP4 embeds for my portfolio, MP4 won by a mile

I spent a whole afternoon converting my animations to GIFs for my online gallery, and they looked so muddy and washed out on my phone. Then I tried uploading the same pieces as MP4s with a transparent background using a quick CSS trick, and the colors popped way better at a fraction of the file size. The GIFs were 8MB each while the MP4s were under 1MB, which made my loading times feel instant. Anyone else ditch GIFs for video embeds on their showcase site, or is there another format I should test?
