The 3-second rule for microwave popcorn is a lie

I always ignored the instructions on microwave popcorn bags. Figured they were just conservative so you wouldn't burn it. Last week I set the timer for 3 minutes on a 3.5 ounce bag and ended up with half the kernels still hard and the other half scorched. Took me 4 bags over two nights to finally listen. Now I stand there and count the pops, pulling it at the 2-second gap between pops. It actually works every time. Why do they print those misleading times on the box anyway? Does anyone else just ignore package directions and regret it?
