My neighbor's advice about letting the dog lead the walk backfired big time

So last Tuesday my neighbor across the street, an older guy with a lab, told me I should just let my beagle mix take the lead and sniff whatever she wants for the whole walk. Said it would tire her out mentally and calm her down. I tried it for 3 days and by the third walk she had pulled me over to a dead squirrel and rolled in it for a solid minute before I could stop her. The smell was so bad I had to give her a bath at 9pm with the hose in the backyard. Has anyone else had a similar bad outcome from the let them sniff everything method, or did I just get unlucky with my garbage-obsessed dog?
