I thought keeping my dog on a short leash in the neighborhood was rude, then a mail carrier in Fresno changed my mind
Six weeks ago I was walking my lab mix, Otis, past the same corner near our place in Fresno and a mail carrier flagged me down. She said she has been bitten three times on her route this year, and every single one was a dog on a long retractable leash that the owner could not reel in fast enough. I always figured a long leash gives my dog more freedom and that is just being a good owner, but she pointed out that when a dog is 15 feet ahead of you, you have zero control in that first second when something goes wrong. I started trying a 4 foot leash on our normal loops, and the difference is honestly wild, Otis calms down way faster when he has to stay close, and I can actually step between him and a skateboard or a stroller without drama. It is not about being strict, it is about reacting in time. Curious if anyone else made this change, and did your dog settle down after a week or did it take longer?
