A park ranger in Cleveland made me rethink my dog's off leash habit

I was walking my lab near Edgewater Park last week and let him off leash for a few minutes like I always do. A ranger came up and said, 'Every owner thinks their dog is the exception until a kid gets knocked over.' It hit different because he was calm about it, not yelling or writing a ticket. I've been using a 30 foot training lead since then, and honestly my dog still gets just as much exercise. Has anyone else had a stranger's comment change how they handle their walk routine?
