I finally set up a travel VPN after my data got snooped in Barcelona

I was in Barcelona last month and used free Wi-Fi at a cafe to check my bank account. A few days later, I saw weird login tries on my email from places I had not been. It hit me that public Wi-Fi is a big risk if you are not careful. When I got home, I read up on VPNs and chose one that works well for phones. Now, I always switch on my VPN before I connect to any open network while traveling. It hides my online activity so hackers cannot see my personal info. Setting it up was quick, just a few taps in an app on my phone. If you travel a lot, using a VPN is a simple way to protect your data.

That bit about free Wi-Fi being a big risk... it's part of a bigger thing I see all the time. We get used to things being free and easy, so we stop asking what the real cost is. That free network wants something from you, your data, because the internet isn't really free. We should know this by now but we click "connect" without a second thought. It's a habit we all need to break, not just when we're on a trip.

Sometimes the convenience is just worth it though.

What's a little identity theft between friends, anyway?
