Finally switched load charts from memory to a pinned sheet after 14 years
I used to brag I could run any lift without looking at the book. Then last Tuesday on a job in Columbus, I had a 38,000 lb pick at 42 feet and guessed the radius wrong by 2 feet. The load cell alarm went off and the safety guy chewed me out in front of everyone. Turns out the new lattice attachment changed my chart numbers more than I thought. I printed the full chart, laminated it, and clipped it to the cab visor. My gut still does the quick math, but now I verify before setting outriggers. Anyone else ditch the memory method after a close call? What made you switch?
Laminated visor chart at 42 feet beats my old trick of yelling "she'll hold" and hoping. Mine was a 6,000 lb pick off by a foot in a Fairbanks yard that finally got me to tape one inside the cab.
