My reading lamp fell off the shelf and took out my mug collection

So last Tuesday I was rearranging my little corner nook in my apartment near downtown Austin, and my clamp lamp just gave up and crashed straight into the bottom shelf. It shattered three of my favorite handmade mugs, including the one my sister got me from that pottery place in Fredericksburg. I ended up using command strips to secure the lamp base and now it feels way sturdier for less than $8. Has anyone else had a lighting setup fail on them and what did you use to fix it?
