My 3 foot LED strip turned my desk into a fire hazard

Last Tuesday I grabbed a cheap LED strip from a discount bin for $6 and stuck it behind my monitor for that cozy glow, but by Friday the adhesive had melted and the strip was sagging onto my power strip. I caught it when I smelled that weird burning plastic smell right before it shorted out, and now I'm scared to use any lighting that isn't a basic lamp. Has anyone else had cheap LED strips fail like this, and what do you actually trust for under-desk lighting?
