My barista friend in Boise claims a $12 hand grinder beats my $150 electric one, and now I don't know what to believe
So my buddy Dave works at this little shop in Boise and last weekend he handed me a cup he made with a cheap hand grinder he got for $12 at a garage sale. I've been using a $150 electric burr grinder at my place for about 2 years, and I was ready to laugh at him. But the cup was sweeter and the flavors were way more clear than what I get at home, and I honestly couldn't tell him it was worse. His point was that the hand grinder gives him way more control over the grind size because he can feel the beans fighting back, and he says electric grinders heat up the beans and kill the flavor. I still think that sounds like a lot of work at 6am when I can just push a button and walk away. Now I'm stuck wondering if I wasted money on my setup or if Dave is just really good at brewing and the grinder has nothing to do with it. Has anyone here actually switched from electric to hand grinding and stuck with it, or did you go running back to the button after a week?
