I was measuring my coffee with a scoop for 3 years and a $12 kitchen scale in Austin made me feel dumb
I always used the little plastic scoop that came with my drip machine, two level scoops per mug, and wondered why some bags tasted great and others tasted like hot dirt. My buddy in Austin handed me his $12 kitchen scale one morning and had me weigh 18 grams for a 10 oz cup instead of scooping, and the same beans I had written off suddenly tasted sweet and chocolatey. Turns out my scoops were swinging between 12 and 22 grams depending on the grind and how I piled it. If you switched to weighing, did you change your water ratio too, or just leave it at whatever you were doing before?
Man, I did the exact same thing for years and felt like such a dummy when I finally weighed it out. My old scoop was all over the place too, sometimes 14 grams, sometimes 20, and I blamed the beans every single time. Sticking with the scoop is like baking with a coffee mug as your measuring cup, you just never get the same cup twice. When I switched I did change my water ratio as I went, mostly because once I knew the coffee weight it was easy to just multiply by 16 or 17 for the water. That part took me a few weeks of fiddling though, some beans wanted more water and some wanted less. Start with whatever ratio you were already close to and just adjust one thing at a time, otherwise you are chasing your tail.
