Napping on a $15 throw vs a $120 weighted blanket, my brain picked a side

So last month I crashed on my sister's couch after a long drive from Austin. She handed me this thin, ratty throw blanket that smelled like her dog and had a hole near the corner. I passed out for TWO hours, woke up feeling like a fresh person. Got home, tried my fancy weighted blanket that cost me $120. Tossed and turned for 45 minutes, gave up, and grabbed the old fleece stadium blanket from my car. Slept like a rock. Something about that cheap, worn fabric just hits different. Is there a science to this or am I just weird? Anyone else got a beat-up blanket that beats their expensive one?

...and that's exactly why I still sleep with my high school marching band jacket draped over my pillow. It's got the weird satin lining inside and the sleeves are completely frayed from years of wiping drumstick rosin on them. My wife bought me one of those cooling memory foam pillows for our anniversary and I literally shoved it in the closet after three nights. This jacket has been through a Texas summer in the parking lot at 7am and somehow it's still the only thing that puts me under. I think it's the familiarity more than the material, like your brain just knows it's safe and checks out. Weird how a $30 hoodie from Goodwill can beat a $200 sleep setup, but here we are.

Is it the weight of the fabric or the weight of the memory that puts you under, @oscarhart? I read somewhere that familiar smells and textures can trigger a slower brain wave pattern, like your body skips the whole "is this safe" check and just goes straight to sleep. That cheap blanket probably smells like your sister's house and a thousand lazy Sundays, so your brain just bails on worrying and drops you right into a coma.
