Old timer at the Pilot in Barstow said I was chaining my excavator wrong
I was grabbing coffee at the Pilot in Barstow last Tuesday when a guy in a worn out CAT hat asked if that was my lowboy out front with the mini excavator on it. He said he ran heavy haul for 30 odd years and that I had my chains crossed over the tracks when I should have been running them straight down to the D rings. I nodded along but honestly thought he was just killing time. Two days later I watched a guy lose a similar sized machine off his trailer on the 15 near Victorville because the bucket shifted and popped a binder. Now I am second guessing every strap job I do. Do you all run straight chains on tracked machines or is crossing them fine if you tension them right?
