My uncle Gary in Bakersfield started buying canned goods and bottled water back in 1998, and our family treated it like a joke at every Thanksgiving. He had a whole closet of rice, powdered milk, and batteries, plus about $600 in silver coins he kept in an ammo box. I told him for years that Y2K was a bust and that preppers were just watching too many late night shows. Then last month a windstorm knocked out power in his area for 6 days, and the stores were empty within hours because trucks could not get through the roads. He fed four neighbors with what he had and never once had to stand in a line for anything. I still think a lot of prepper stuff online is sales hype, but his basic setup was not crazy at all. What pushed you from laughing at preppers to actually keeping some stuff on hand, or are you still not buying it?
