Serious question, do you screed off the forms or off the grade stakes on a driveway like the one in Tempe?

Last Tuesday on a 40 foot driveway in Tempe I had to pick between screeding off the forms or off the grade stakes, and I went with the forms because the stakes looked sketchy. The pour came out fine but I fought the screed for 20 minutes trying to find my line. What do you all use when the stakes look off, and does it ever bite you later?
