Ran a SMART test on a drive that sounded fine and it printed 1,247 reallocated sectors
Customer brought in a desktop from 2019 that was running slow but booted up no problem, so I figured it was just Windows bloat and started prepping a clean install. Before I wiped anything I ran a quick SMART check just to cover myself, and the drive reported 1,247 reallocated sectors and a pending sector count that made me sit back in my chair. The machine had been happily chugging along for who knows how long with a drive that was basically a Jenga tower one bad write away from falling over. I cloned what I could to a new SSD, and about 60% of the way through the old drive finally gave up and started clicking like a Geiger counter. Ended up recovering most of the photos via a $40 dock and some patience, but the customer lost a folder of tax stuff from March. Now I run that 30 second check before I touch anything, every single time, even when the thing boots fine. How many of you skip SMART tests on machines that seem healthy, and has it ever bitten you?
