Serious question, is it normal to break your own code the second you touch it?

I spent about 3 hours last Tuesday getting a small to-do list app working in Python, felt great, then renamed one variable and the whole thing crashed with a KeyError I still don't fully get. My guess is I changed something the rest of the file depended on and never went back to check the other spots. How do you all keep track of where a name gets used before you touch it?
