Sat in a laundromat on 5th for 2 hours with my laptop and watched a guy learn HTML on an old Chromebook
I was stuck waiting on a wash cycle at the laundromat on 5th Ave since my dryer died, so I brought my laptop to mess around with a little Python course I've been chipping at. Two machines down from me this older guy, maybe 60ish, had an ancient Chromebook open and I could see he was working through some free HTML tutorial because the words on his screen were all tags and angle brackets. I peeked a bit (sorry) and he was stuck on why his image wouldn't show up, just a broken box, and he'd typed the file path in about four different ways. After my second cycle I finally leaned over and showed him how the file needed to sit in the same folder as his page, and he just laughed and said he'd been fighting that thing for an hour. He told me he runs a little shoe repair stand nearby and wanted a site to show his hours and prices since people keep calling him at 9pm. We ended up talking the whole 40 minute dry cycle and honestly it got me back into my own practice, because here's a guy two hours into his first lesson and I quit my last course at chapter 3 because functions felt hard. It made me think about how I gave up when something got confusing but this dude just kept going until somebody walked by who could help. Where do you all go to work on your coding when you need a change of scenery, and has a random stranger ever gotten you back on track?
