My first foreman told me to always run a dry cycle on a new program, which I thought was a waste of time until I watched a brand new Mazak mill try to rapid straight through a vise jaw in Omaha.

Has anyone else had a close call that made a 'pointless' rule finally click for them?

Yeah, that'll make you a believer real quick. I had a similar moment with a new lathe program that nearly crashed because I skipped the dry run. It's one of those things you don't get until you see it go wrong.

Watching a machine almost eat itself teaches you more than any manual ever could.

Remember that time I tried to "just listen" to a bearing? Thought it sounded fine, gave it a little grease, and called it good. Next day it's screaming like a banshee and throwing metal confetti. Learned more about bearing failure in those two minutes than I had in two years.
