Found out my collet nut was lying to me after checking runout with a cheap indicator

Been running the same CAT40 holder for months and my parts were drifting about 0.002" on the last op. Thought it was the spindle bearings or maybe even the tool steel dulling faster than usual. Took a $35 magnetic base indicator from Harbor Freight and checked the taper seat and the collet face. Turns out the collet nut had a burr on the threading from when I smacked it against the pallet last quarter. Filed it down with a diamond hone, and runout dropped to 0.0003". Wild that something that cheap and simple was the whole issue. Anyone else ever trace a mystery tolerance problem back to a dent or burr on a holder instead of the machine itself?
