My smart thermostat made my electric bill jump $48 last month

I installed a new smart thermostat in March thinking it would save money automatically. Instead, it kept switching to "eco" mode during the day and my house got so hot that I caved and ran window units in two rooms. The window units pulled way more power than the central AC would have, and my bill went from $132 to $180 in April. I finally turned off the learning feature and set a simple schedule that matches when I'm actually home. Has anyone else had a smart device outsmart itself like this, or did I just pick a bad model?
