Why does nobody talk about the weird smell in Cleveland basements after a big rain?
Last Tuesday we got that huge storm and I went down to my basement on West 44th to grab a box of old photos. The whole place smelled like a wet dog mixed with pennies and I thought a pipe had burst. Turned out water was seeping through the floor drain and the sump pump float got stuck on a chunk of old leaves. I pulled the float up by hand and it kicked on, pumped out about 6 inches of water in 20 minutes. The smell stuck around for 3 days even after I ran a box fan and two damp rid buckets. Now I keep a $12 backup float switch in a drawer and check the pit every time it rains. Anyone else deal with a sump pump that works fine until the exact moment it doesn't?
