Finally got the hood latch on my 1978 F-150 to close right after messing with it for 3 months
Three months ago I was at a gas station off I-80 near Lincoln, Nebraska, and my hood popped up on me at 60 mph. Scared the daylights out of me. The latch would catch but never sit flush after that, so I'd have to slam it twice and it still rattled going down the road. I tried bending the striker, greasing everything, even bought a new spring kit for $22 that didn't fix squat. Yesterday I was poking around the junkyard in Grand Island and a guy named Dale who's been pulling truck parts for 30 years told me to loosen both latch bolts, let the hood drop on its own weight, then snug them down. Took me about 4 minutes in his driveway and it clicked shut on the first try, flush and quiet. My wife thinks I'm nuts for being this happy about a hood. Has anyone else had a latch fight them like this, or is it just me and old trucks?
