Thought I was being helpful giving directions at the DMV, lady set me straight in 30 seconds
I was at the DMV on Ponce in Atlanta a few weeks back waiting for my number when this older woman asked me where the photo station was. I pointed her toward the far end, real confident about it, because I'd been there an hour already and thought I had the place mapped out. She walked off, came back five minutes later, and said, quiet but direct, 'That's the cashier line, sweetheart. The photo booth is right behind you.' I turned around and there it was, ten feet away the whole time. I felt like a idiot because I gave directions with all that certainty and never once looked behind me. She wasn't even mad, just shook her head and laughed. Now I catch myself doing the same thing at work, giving people the quick answer instead of actually looking at where I'm pointing. How do you tell the difference between someone who really knows a place and someone who just sounds sure?
