Guessing that deli guy also does a bit of work in food service. I've had a waiter once give me back my tip and say my kids were well-behaved, which was kinda nice but also made me realize I was only tipping out of habit. That comment stuck with me, and now I pay more attention to when service is actually above and beyond. Most of the time I tip anyway, but it changed why I do it.
