The bus driver who made me question my whole opinion on small talk

I've always been the type to keep earbuds in and stare out the window, especially on the 5am route to work in Denver, but last Tuesday this driver just started chatting about his daughter's violin recital while we waited at a red light. He said something like, 'You never know what someone's carrying, so I try to make the first 10 seconds easy' and it hit me that I've been treating every stranger like a distraction. Now I'm wondering, has anyone else had a random comment from a stranger flip their whole take on something they thought was set?
