Honestly, @lily70 is right, and that finisher's tip just turned my whole plan upside down too.

What did the finisher say that got you rethinking it? I was reading a woodworking forum where this guy swore by just using a really thin coat of dewaxed shellac as a sealer on fir instead of a traditional pre-stain. He said it lets some color through but stops the worst blotching. Made me wonder if I've been overcomplicating things with the stuff from the can.
