Split a 2x4 rail on a cabinet face last month because I followed the 'always pre-drill' advice, and the old timer on site told me to clamp a backer block instead and skip the bit for soft pine. Now I keep a scrap block in my pouch, so what do you all do when the wood is too soft to hold a screw without splitting?
