My dad's Sunday drive got rained out in 1998 and that's how I learned his car got 9 miles to the gallon
We were supposed to head out to a lake about 40 miles from our place in Ohio, but a storm rolled in and we stayed home instead. While we sat in the garage waiting it out, my dad pulled out this little notebook where he wrote down every fill up, and I saw the numbers for the first time. Nine miles to the gallon, on a car that got maybe 12 on a good day, and he just shrugged like it was normal. I was a kid so I thought that was wild, but what really got me was that gas was around $1.06 a gallon back then, so a 40 mile round trip cost him under five bucks. Now I look at my own car and a tank lasts me a week, and I still complain about prices. What did your family drive back then, and did you ever see the real numbers on it?
Nine miles to the gallon is brutal but honestly the five dollar road trip is the part that gets me. My mom had a big old station wagon and I never once saw her write down a fill up, so who knows what that thing was really burning. Kind of wild that your dad tracked it all in a notebook though, that takes some dedication. Gas at a buck a gallon makes me want to cry a little.
