TIL my cheap tent stakes bent flat at 2am in a storm at Lake Tahoe
Went camping at Fallen Leaf Lake near South Lake Tahoe two weekends ago and a storm rolled in around 11pm with gusts I swear hit 40mph. At 2am I woke up to the whole tent wall smacking me in the face because three of my stakes had bent almost 90 degrees and pulled loose from the rocky soil. I ended up wrapping my paracord around two big granite rocks and using them as anchors, which honestly held better than any stake I own. Got maybe two hours of sleep and spent the next morning hunched over trying to bend the stakes back with a multitool, which mostly just made them worse. Now I'm thinking about picking up some sand or snow style anchors for rocky ground, has anyone dealt with this at higher elevation sites?
