I used to think a 30-degree sleeping bag was fine for anything, but my buddy in Denver set me straight.
We were planning a trip to the Rockies in early October, and I was just going to pack my old bag. He looked at me and said, 'Man, that's a good way to have a miserable night. The temp rating is for survival, not comfort. You'll be cold.' I bought a 15-degree bag for that trip and slept like a rock. Anyone else have a story about gear that just wasn't right for the conditions?

Honestly @murphy.abby, what bag do you even use for fall trips?

Wait, you seriously thought a 30-degree bag was good for anything?

Honestly used to grab my 30-degree bag for everything until a cold snap last October. Woke up shivering at 3 AM with temps in the low 40s, it was brutal. Now I keep a 15-degree bag for anything below 50 at night.
