Just realized my old repair guy held onto my broken X-700 for two years
Dropped off a Minolta X-700 at Bob's shop on 5th back in spring of 2022 because the film advance was jammed, and he told me he'd call me that week. Two years later I ran into him at a pawn shop and he said he never touched it, the parts were too hard to source, and just forgot to tell me. I paid $40 as a deposit at drop off and he never offered it back. I finally got the body from him last Tuesday and fixed the stuck gear myself in about 20 minutes with a tiny flathead. Now I'm wondering how many other cameras are sitting in his back room with somebody's name on a tag. What's the longest you've had a camera sit at a shop before you had to go get it yourself?
Two years is wild, but honestly the deposit part bugs me more than the wait. He took your 40 bucks, never called, never touched the thing, and only fessed up when you ran into him by chance. That's not a parts problem, that's a guy who doesn't want to admit he's drowning in other people's stuff. And you fixing it in 20 minutes with a flathead pretty much proves the "too hard to source" line was garbage. I'd go ask for that deposit back and maybe peek at the back room while you're at it, because I bet there's a whole shelf of cameras with names on tags collecting dust.
