Showerthought: my uncle ran his whole deck business off sticky notes and I've been overcomplicating growth ever since
Sat down with my uncle Ray at his kitchen table in Akron a couple weeks ago because he's been running a deck building crew for 22 years and I wanted to pick his brain about scaling. I showed up with this whole 14 page growth plan, pricing tiers, a hiring roadmap, the works. He laughed, pulled a shoebox out of the closet, and dumped about 400 sticky notes on the table. Every job he ever booked, every lead, referrals, callbacks, all of it. He pointed at a note from 2019 that just said "Deb from next door to the Hendersons, wants cedar, call Thursday." Then he said the thing that got me: "I don't need a system, I need to know who's calling Thursday." I realized I'd been spending 6 hours a week building dashboards when the actual bottleneck in my business was that I never followed up on anyone. It hit different because he's doing around $600k a year with a shoebox. I still think a CRM makes sense for me, but I ripped up half my plan that night. Curious if anyone here has a simple system that actually works, or did you all go full software and never look back?
