My uncle said $20 of dried beans would feed me for a month, so I bought 8 pounds and learned some things
My uncle Ray (we've got a lot of Rays in this family) swore up and down at Easter that a big bag of dried pinto beans was the cheapest food on earth and that I was a fool for buying the canned ones. So I got 8 pounds for about $12 at the Save A Lot over on 8th, took them back to my apartment, and dumped way too many in a pot with no plan. I did not soak them the first time and ended up with beans that were still crunchy after 2 solid hours, plus I set off my smoke alarm twice. My neighbor knocked on the wall, which was fair. Second batch went better once I let them sit overnight in salt water like he said, and I stretched that whole bag into 5 dinners with rice and some cheap sausage. My uncle was actually right for once, which I hate saying out loud. The downside is I now have a freezer full of beans and my wife is starting to complain about the smell in the kitchen. Does anyone have a trick to make them actually taste like something besides plain beans, or am I doomed to eat the same pot for a month?
