An old mason in Gary showed me how to tap a brick once, and I still use it 11 years later
Back in 2013 I was on a job in Gary, Indiana, laying a garage wall, and this guy named Walt who was pushing 70 watched me fight a brick that just would not sit flat. He didn't say a word, just took his trowel handle and tapped the high corner twice, and it dropped right into place. I'd been cutting bricks in half to fix that problem for months. He said the mud tells you where it wants to go if you stop forcing it. Anybody else have an old timer teach them a small trick that turned into a habit?
