Showerthought: the guy at the Portland nursery said moss is a sign your soil is alive and I keep thinking about it
I was at a nursery over on SE Division in Portland two weeks ago buying a $12 fern and the guy working there pointed at the green fuzz on my pot and said moss is a sign your soil is alive, not a problem to scrub off. I had been scraping it off my pots for years like it was mold, and it turns out it was just a wet, healthy top layer doing its thing. I went home and left the moss alone on my three biggest pots and they look better after a month, no sign of anything bad. Now I am second guessing every time I dumped a pot out to clean it. Does anyone here actually grow moss on purpose, and what do you put it on?
Ha, that nursery guy is right! I grow moss on purpose on my shaded brick path and on a few old terracotta pots. It holds water in and looks way better than bare dirt. Just keep it damp and out of full sun and it does the rest.
