Switched from a bone folder to a teflon one last month and my creases finally stopped cracking
I used to press every signature fold with an old bone folder I got at a garage sale in Des Moines, and about 1 in 10 creases would crack the paper right at the spine. Last month a binder at my local guild meeting handed me her teflon folder and let me try a few folds, and the difference on coated stock was night and day. Does anyone else here keep both around, or did you drop the bone folder for good once you tried teflon?
Wondering if you tried adjusting your pressure with the bone folder before you gave up on it, because cracking at the spine usually points to technique as much as the tool. Bone folders burnish as they press, which is great for some papers but can spell trouble on coated stock where the surface is less forgiving. Teflon glides instead of burnishing, so it makes sense you saw a big change there. Did the binder who lent you hers mention whether she still keeps a bone folder for certain jobs, like scoring or working with thicker handmade papers? I ask because I have read that some folks keep both and pick based on the paper, not the folder. Curious where you land after a few more months with the teflon.
