PVA vs wheat paste for a full rebind, ran both side by side
I did a rebind of an old 1890s novel last month and tested PVA and wheat paste on two same-size text blocks. The PVA dried fast, maybe 2 hours, but the pages felt stiff and the spine cracked when I opened it fully. The wheat paste took overnight to set, but the joints flexed smooth and the cover sat flat. I used a 50/50 mix of wheat paste and PVA for the final one, which gave me a middle ground that held up better. Has anyone else tried a hybrid for aged paper, or do you stick with one over the other?
