Corners on a thick textblock, 3 hours lost

Tried rounding corners on a 700 page textblock with a chisel like I saw in a tutorial from Seattle book arts. Ruined 2 covers and wrecked the edge grain before I grabbed a cheap 3 inch sander from Harbor Freight. Should have just sanded from the start, that took 20 minutes instead. Anyone else burn a full afternoon on a tool that was the wrong call?
