Coptic stitch before and after, 8 months apart

I bound my first Coptic stitch journal last March and it was a wobbly mess, pages sagged and the covers didnt even line up. Last week I did another one using the same $15 kit from a local shop in Austin, and the difference is honestly wild. What changed was I started measuring my thread per section instead of guessing, plus I stopped pulling the stitches super tight. The spine sits flat now and the pages open like a real book should. Has anyone else gone back to an early binding and been shocked by the progress? What was the one fix that made it click for you?
