Dropped $40 on a beat up paperback of a book I swore I'd never read, and a guy at the Tucson swap meet talked me into it
He handed me his worn copy of Blood Meridian and said the first 50 pages are rough but push through, and now I'm hunting down everything else by that author to trade here.
Wait, he told you the first 50 pages are rough? I'd say it's more like the first 100 that feel like walking through mud, and that's coming from someone who loves the thing. The prose in Blood Meridian is strange on purpose, all those long sentences with no commas, but once your brain gets used to the rhythm it clicks and you can't put it down. If you liked it, check out The Road or No Country for Old Men first, they're way easier reads and will tell you if you actually like McCarthy or just liked the violence in that one.
