Vent: It took me 4 months to crack the ending of The Goldfinch in my book club

Honestly, everyone in my group loved it but I was stuck on why Theo never got punished for the painting. I spent 4 months rereading chapters and checking forums before I realized the point is the guilt is the punishment. Has anyone else had a book that took way too long to finally click for them?

Took me six months to realize the whole point of Moby Dick was the whale. My book club still brings it up every time someone shows up late.
