Rant: our book club used to argue for two hours about endings, now we barely make it twenty minutes
Back in 2019 we'd sit in Dana's kitchen in Cleveland and fight about whether the last chapter of a novel actually worked, nobody had read reviews, and now every pick comes with a starred review and a Goodreads score so we show up already agreeing it was fine, and I miss when we had to figure out our own take, so what's a book that made your group actually argue in the last year?
The Goodreads score thing is real but it doesn't always shut down the arguing like you'd think. Our group picked The Midnight Library last year, and even with like a 3.9 on there, two people HATED it and one of them called it self help dressed up as fiction, which set off a whole fight. So the scores are there but folks still have opinions, maybe the group just got tired or the picks got safer. Dana's kitchen sounds like the real magic though, not the reviews.
